Berliner designed the Bristol House in a Mission-style vernacular, creating a plan that integrates indoor and outdoor living. The house is organized on three floors with carefully defined public and private spaces, all centered around a circular outdoor courtyard onto which all public rooms open. The living room, kitchen/great room and courtyard share a two-sided fireplace. A key focus of the design was the use of materials, building systems and mechanical systems that minimize the amount of environmental pollutants in the interior. All materials were chosen based on their low use of toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde and other VOCs.
